Equipment
What do you need to wear for sailing...
- Life Jacket (provided by CBI) is mandatory
- Helmet (provided by the team) is mandatory
- Wetsuit - CBI requires a wetsuit or drysuit for all students sailing in 420s. For safety it's important to come dressed appropriately for the cold weather. The wetsuit doesn't have to be expensive or sailing specific. It can be short or long.
- Rain jacket and pants - We sail rain or shine (unless there is lightening), and these layers are important OVER the wetsuit
- Gloves, hat, sneakers, sailing boots or boat shoes. You must have closed toe shoes and cannot sail in flip flops!
- Change of clothes - Having a plastic bag for wet stuff and a change of clothes for if you get wet are important if you go swimming (a daily possibility).
- A lock - there are lockers at CBI but locks are BYO
- Like skiing or hiking, layers are crucial for comfort, performance and safety. When it warms up shorts may be alright, but even on an 80 degree day in May, it's usually much colder on the water and by 6pm when we get done.
- Sunscreen is always recommended.
What not to take on the water...
As it's likely that you'll occasionally capsize you should not take cellphones or expensive sunglasses on the boat. Consider wearing croakies if you have prescription glasses so they don't go swimming (they sink).
